What is an online loan?
An online loan is borrowing that you apply for through a website rather than completing the whole application in a branch or by post. “Online” describes the application channel; it does not identify one particular type of loan or guarantee an instant decision.
Online loans can include unsecured personal loans and other credit products. The lender sets the product, eligibility rules, interest rate, repayment term and checks. Read the proposed agreement carefully so you know exactly what type of borrowing is being offered.
Money Trumpet is a credit broker, not a lender. We will pass your completed application to a lender or another broker for consideration. That company will contact you directly, carry out its checks and explain any offer it is prepared to make or arrange.
How do online loans work?
The form is completed online, but the company receiving it still makes its own lending and affordability decisions.
Choose an amount
Request only what you need and consider whether every repayment would remain manageable throughout the term.
Complete the form
Provide accurate personal, contact, address, employment and income information through the secure online application.
Application is passed on
Money Trumpet will pass your completed application to a lender or another broker for consideration.
Direct contact and checks
The company will contact you, complete its checks and explain any available offer. You decide whether to proceed.
Are online loans different from personal loans?
An online loan is not necessarily different from a personal loan. A personal loan describes the borrowing product, while “online loan” usually means that the application and communication happen digitally.
The same unsecured personal loan might be available online, by telephone or through another channel. If you want product-specific information, compare our guides to personal loans and unsecured loans.
What information do you need to apply for a loan online?
Have accurate identity, contact, address, employment and income information ready before starting.
Personal details
Your name, date of birth, contact information and UK residential status help identify you and establish basic eligibility.
Address history
You may be asked for your current address, residential status and previous addresses for identity and credit checks.
Employment and income
Accurate employment or income information helps the recipient assess whether the proposed repayment may be affordable.
Application details
The amount requested, intended purpose and other commitments can affect the company’s assessment and any offer.
Protect your information: never disclose an online-banking password, card PIN or one-time security code in a loan application. A legitimate firm should explain what information it needs and how it will use it.
Who can apply for an online loan?
To use Money Trumpet’s online application service, you must be at least 18 years old and a permanent UK resident. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee an offer, a particular amount or a particular interest rate.
Lenders and brokers use their own eligibility, creditworthiness and affordability rules. They may consider income, employment, address history, regular costs, existing commitments, credit history and the amount requested.
Can you apply with a low credit score?
All credit scores can be considered, but no credit score guarantees acceptance. If previous credit problems are central to your search, the dedicated bad credit loans page explains the separate £500–£10,000 application route.
How quickly can an online loan be approved and paid?
Completing an online form can be quick, but approval and payment times depend on the company receiving the application.
Form completion
Money Trumpet’s initial application is designed to take around two minutes when the required information is ready.
Provider checks
The lender or broker may need to verify identity, income, affordability and credit information or request further evidence.
Decision and payment
The recipient controls its decision, agreement and payment timetable. Money Trumpet does not promise instant approval or same-day funds.
Will an online loan application affect your credit score?
Completing Money Trumpet’s online form will not affect your credit score because Money Trumpet does not search your credit file. The lender or other broker receiving your application may carry out its own checks.
A soft eligibility check is not normally visible to other lenders. A hard credit search is recorded on your credit file and may be seen by other lenders. The receiving company should explain the type of search it uses before you proceed.
Several hard searches over a short period can make obtaining credit more difficult. Check application information carefully and learn more about how loan decisions are made.
How should you compare online loans?
Compare online loans using the actual interest rate, monthly repayment, repayment term, total amount repayable and any relevant fees. Convenience and speed should not replace a careful comparison of the full cost and risks.
A lower monthly payment can cost more overall when it extends the repayment term. The representative APR helps compare advertised credit, but it is not a promise of the rate you will receive.
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Actual rate and APR | The rate offered to you and the APR used to express the annual cost of credit. | Your actual offer can differ from the representative rate in an advert. |
| Monthly repayment | The amount and due date of each scheduled payment. | Every payment must remain manageable for the whole term. |
| Repayment term | How long the agreement lasts. | A longer term may lower payments but increase the total cost. |
| Total amount repayable | The expected total paid if the agreement runs as stated. | This is clearer than comparing monthly figures alone. |
| Fees and early settlement | Any relevant charges and the rules for repaying early. | These can affect both cost and flexibility. |
How can you check whether an online loan company is legitimate?
Check the company on the FCA Firm Checker and make sure its website, telephone number and other contact details match the regulator’s record. Money Trumpet’s authorised business is Stork Finance Limited, FCA reference number 1018154.
Be cautious if someone contacts you unexpectedly after an online application, pressures you to act immediately or asks for payment by bank transfer, voucher or cryptocurrency. Verify the company independently using the details shown on the FCA record.
Watch for loan fee fraud
The FCA warns that scammers often target people who have searched or applied for loans online. An unexpected request for an upfront payment can be a warning sign. Money Trumpet does not charge customers a fee for using its service.
If you suspect fraud, stop communicating and use the FCA’s official reporting guidance. Do not send money or disclose passwords, PINs or one-time security codes.
Online loan wording: what does it really mean?
Marketing phrases can describe the application process without guaranteeing a lending outcome.
| Phrase | What it can mean | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Online loan | The application is completed through a website or digital journey. | A particular loan type, rate, approval decision or payment time. |
| Quick application | The initial form may be short or designed for rapid completion. | Quick approval, no checks or immediate payment. |
| All credit scores considered | The provider can consider applications from people with different credit histories. | Acceptance, a particular amount or an affordable rate. |
| Credit broker | A business that introduces or passes applications to lenders or other brokers. | That the broker provides the loan itself or searches every provider. |
What should you consider before applying for a loan online?
Before applying for a loan online, confirm that borrowing is necessary, request no more than you need and test the repayments against a realistic budget. Consider whether you could continue paying if income fell or essential costs increased.
Read the pre-contract information and proposed agreement carefully. Check the actual rate, all repayments, term, total amount repayable, late-payment consequences and early-settlement rules before accepting anything.
Alternatives can include waiting and saving, reducing the expense, checking a credit union or considering a suitable interest-free arrangement. If borrowing would cover regular bills or debts you already cannot manage, free debt advice may be more appropriate than another loan.
